It is the time of year for orphan re-homing. These very cute ruminants will snuggle with anything warm this time of year!
But what about their methane emissions? A significant carbon footprint for a livestock enterprise. There is some really exciting work going on around ‘early life programming’. If we reduce menthanogenic microbes in a rumen very early in an animals life, then it will be maintained for life, resulting in low methane emitting livestock. Watch this space!

Woodside is seeking approval from the WA Gov to extract gas from its Scarborough site.
Apart from being citizens of the 🌏, why would farmers and the agricultural industry be concerned?
▶️As an industry we want to do our part to 🔽 WA’s emissions. We want other industries to do the same.
▶️ We want our supply chain to have access to renewables (ie. green hydrogen to manufacture products such as fertiliser, not gas).
▶️In the transition to carbon neutrality, farmers will need tree plantings to initially offsets our own emissions. Not to sell at a low carbon price so that fossil fuel companies can continue and increase their own emissions.

Landmark decision handed down by the Federal court.... the Minister for the Environment has a duty of care to protect children against the projected impacts of climate change. This ruling came about with regards to the application to extend the Vickery coal mine in NSW.
This is HUGE and our farming children must feel heartened by this decision. 🙌🏽🌱🐞🌏

This briefing tomorrow, hosted by @groundswellgiving is bound to be insightful and inspiring.
A gift to Australia and the planet is our Tim Flannery. His books are just fabulous. I became a huge fan after reading of Australia’s mega fauna in ‘Future eaters’, then acutely aware of our impact on climate in ‘Weather makers’.
When invested in addressing climate change, we understand the problems fairly well, and it can be a weight to carry around. So it is with open arms, and sleeves rolled up, we welcome talk about climate solutions.

Embedded into this farmers annual budget is a carbon balance sheet. This results in determining emissions (nitrous oxide, methane and carbon dioxide) by commodity (canola, barley, wheat, cattle, sheep) and by enterprise (grains, livestock).
Which GHG do you think gave off the greatest emissions?
In 2019 it was methane.
In 2020 it was nitrous oxide.
More fertiliser was used in 2020 and due to a water shortage, less livestock were run.
We need to understand our baseline emissions before we decide how best to reduce them....
